  • Framing the Book of Exodus by Tautological Predications of God

    Ronald Kessler•ARTICLE•2026

The Book of Exodus is the book of God’s revelations. It is framed by two scenes in which God reveals himself to Moses (Exod 3 and Exod 34). In both scenes, statements about God’s identity are placed in God’s mouth that are, logically speaking, tautologies: ›I am who I am‹ (3:14) and ›Yhwh [is] Yhwh‹ (34:6). These statements make it clear that God cannot be defined by anything other than himself. There is no access to God unless he reveals himself…

  • When Vengeance Overtakes Mourning

    Open Access•Gili Kugler•ARTICLE•2026

Psalm 137 gives voice to two dominant emotions, mourning and vengeance, in the aftermath of the destruction of Jerusalem. Articulated through idioms, metaphors, and rituals, these emotions operate on both the collective and individual levels. The study combines an exploration of the text’s historical and literary development with a psychological perspective, arguing that the dependence between the emotions reflected in the psalm is not inevitable…

  • Polysemy and נפש as Throat in Leviticus 17

    Garrett Haddock•ARTICLE•2026

Given the contents of Lev 17, this portion of the Priestly Pentateuch has long functioned as a locus classicus for discussing the role of blood in Ancient Israelite religion. The identification of blood with life undergirds the prohibition of consuming blood at various points in the Priestly writings. While many studies articulate the close coordination of blood ( דם ) and life ( נפש ), this short article attempts to explain a difficulty in Lev 1…

  • All seinen Brüdern fiel er ins Gesicht«

    Hans-Christoph Aurin•ARTICLE•2026

  • David’s Testament and the Shimei Duplicate

    Raanan Eichler•ARTICLE•2026

David’s Testament (1Kgs 2:1–9) appears as an episode in the larger Solomon Accession Narrative (1Kgs 1–2). This paper does three things. First, it shows that the Testament is a later interpolation into the Accession Narrative. Second, it shows that this conclusion provides a simple solution to the longstanding problem of the Shimei Duplicate, namely that David instructs Solomon regarding Shimei the Benjaminite in 2:8–9 in all textual witnesses an…

  • Rewriting the Rewritten Tradition

    R Adam Dodd•ARTICLE•2026

The relationship between Jubilees 5, Genesis 6 and 1 Enoch 6–11 has been rehearsed many times, but the jubilean author’s method generally has been assumed to be transcriptive from physical manuscripts. This article argues instead that the author drew upon his source material via mnemonic recall, which is consistent with his practice throughout the book. He did not transcribe and edit content from manuscripts but was composing anew. This suggests …

  • Kritische Würdigung der Edition des Hiobbuches in der Biblia Hebraica Quinta

    Markus Witte•ARTICLE•2026

  • Who Will Ascend?«

    Noga Ayali-Darshan•ARTICLE•2026

Psalm 24, whose final form comprises three sections, each with its own theme and style, has long challenged modern scholarship. Interpretations have ranged from viewing it as a compilation of independent units to reading it as a unified composition. Reexamining the psalm’s formation through close analysis of its language, structure, and biblical as well as ancient Near Eastern parallels, this study argues that its present shape developed through …

  • Creating Poetry in LXX Numbers 21

    Michelle Hunt, Michelle D Hunt•ARTICLE•2026

Num 21:30 contains polysemous language, difficult syntax, and an enigmatic relationship to its surrounding context. This paper explores how the Septuagint (LXX) translators addressed the ambiguity of Num 21:30. Despite the prosaic nature of Num 21:30 in the Hebrew consonantal text, later LXX translators interpreted the verse as poetry and employed various scribal techniques to poeticize and harmonize the verse with the preceding song (vv. 27–29).…

  • Social Criticism in the Book of Amos in Light of Recent Archaeological Research

    Omer Sergi, Joachim J Krause•ARTICLE•2026

Amos is marked by strident social criticism depicting enormous affluence of the elite, particularly in Samaria. On what appears to be the other side of the coin, there are simple peasants under increasing economic pressure. The present article contributes to an ongoing discussion regarding the historical background of this literary evidence. It argues that contrary to an overly skeptical view prevailing in parts of exegetical research, there is i…

  • Bedingungen der Vergebung in der Josefsgeschichte

    Open Access•Sonja Kolberg•ARTICLE•2026

  • The semantics of the construct chain in Biblical Hebrew

    Open Access•Achim Müller•ARTICLE•2026

The semantics of the Biblical Hebrew construct chain can be described by taking the semantic class of the terms involved as a basis. This enables clear rules to be derived. However, in many cases, this type of description is insufficient, and encyclopaedic knowledge of the relevant frames must be employed for interpretation

  • News from the East and the North« in Daniel 11

    Open Access•Ihor Kuryliak•ARTICLE•2026

This article reinterprets the enigmatic »news from the east and the north« in Dan 11:44, arguing its symbolic rather than literal geographical meaning. It posits that these alarming messages echo prophetic announcements of the fall of Babylon found in biblical literature (Isa 13–14, 21, 47–48; Jer 25, 50–51) and within the book of Daniel (Dan 4–5). By connecting Dan 11:44 to Isa 41 and Jer 51:46, the article concludes that the »news« functions as…

  • Uncanny Resemblances – Prov 9 as an Introduction to Proverbial Thinking

    Open Access•Yannik Ehmer•ARTICLE•2025

This article suggests that Prov 9 serves as an introduction to Prov 10:1–22:16, »dramatizing« it as competing banquets of Wisdom and Folly. Proverbial knowledge allows to discern between the invitations of the two voices. It enables the student of wisdom to navigate a life amidst ambiguities and uncanniness. Proverbial thinking teaches a phenomenological and critical hermeneutics that takes response-ability––i.e. the ability to respond––seriously…

    Open Access•Lida Leonie Panov•ARTICLE•2025

  • Subversive Humor and the Critique of Imperial Hubris in Prophetic Texts

    Open Access•Marcel Krusche•ARTICLE•2025

In prophetic texts, humor is frequently employed to mock the hubris of imperial powers and rulers. This article describes various forms and stylistic devices of mockery such as caricaturing exaggerations, irony, alienation of genres, the grotesque, and mythical coloring, thereby working out the subversive function of »humor from below«. This type of humor serves to critique power and to expose and shame the (once) powerful. In 2Kgs 19:21 par. Isa…

  • Wer zitiert wen?

    Open Access•Tobias Schmitz•ARTICLE•2025

  • Chronological Notes on the Reigns of Hezekiah and Hoshea

    Yigal Bloch•ARTICLE•2025

The recent study by Nadav Naʾaman on the Judean »fiscal« bullae from private collections supports the reliability of the synchronism between the deaths of Ahaz and Tiglath-pileser III in Isa 14:28–29. Close attention to this synchronism and to the way it is anchored in Mesopotamian chronology dates the death of Ahaz and the enthronement of Hezekiah to 727/6 BCE (a year later than suggested by Naʾaman) and leads to important conclusions concerning…

  • Die Eröffnung des Sacharjabuches (Sach 1,1–6) als prophetentheologischer Programmtext

    Achim Behrens•ARTICLE•2025

    Manfred Hutter•ARTICLE•2015•Cited by: 1

Abs…

  • The Letters in II Maccabees

    Victor Parker•ARTICLE•2007•Cited by: 1

Analysis of the letters cited in II Maccabees suggests that three separate hands inserted them into the text of the book as we have it: those at the beginning are unskilfully attached with little and clumsy consequent revision; the one in chapter 9 is a cunning forgery exactly fitted to its context; those in chapter 11 are genuine and have been inserted into the text with much consequent revision on the basis of certain misunderstandings. This an…
