In recent years, with the publication of books such as Hermann Haller's The Hidden Italy (1986), more attention is being given to Italian literature. In the introduction to his book, Haller makes us aware that dialect literature is composed largely by cultivated writers who also write in the koine (1986, 32). This bilingual/ bicultural vantage point of the writers signifies that much of what they have to offer may be sociolinguistic in nature, and may at times require a sociolinguistic approach as a key. A great deal can be learned from the works of Nino Martoglio (1870-1921), whose name should be included amongst the ranks of great authors, for his literary corpus offers keen insight into the relationship of literature and sociolinguistics, as it strives to convey the ethos of the Catanese folk
