The inhibitory effect of repeated nonreinforced preexposure of a to-be-conditioned stimulus (latent inhibition) was studied in a 2 × 2 factorial design. In conditioning trials, response-contingent shock facilitated conditioning and had a relatively greater effect in stimulus preexposure groups than in control groups without preexposure. Response-contingent shock significantly decreased the response rate during conditioning trials, suggesting that responses other than arousal may account for the facilitative effects of shock on conditioning
