Subjects studied a mixed text (20 paragraphs) of which the odd paragraphs constituted a coherent story and the even (isolated) paragraphs contained plot-irrelevant information. Although plot-irrelevant information tends to be omitted under ordinary conditions of free recall, the results of Experiment 1 showed that recall of this kind of information can be facilitated if the story paragraphs are extended by elaborations that allow the plot-irrelevant information to be related to the story. The results of Experiment 2 indicated that, although the addition of elaborations to isolated paragraphs may facilitate their recall, the addition of elaborations referring to other isolated paragraphs did not additionally facilitate their recall. In Experiment 3, retrieval cues for the isolated paragraphs were inserted within the story paragraphs or the isolated paragraphs. In both cases, recall of the isolated paragraphs was facilitated
