The effect on text recall of explicit self-generation of retrieval cues was investigated in three experiments. In Experiment 1, generation of cues for plotrelevant and plot-irrelevant paragraphs (during learning or at the onset of recall) facilitated recall of irrelevant paragraphs only. In Experiments 2 and 3, generation of cues during learning was carried out with respect to either plot-relevant or plotirrelevant paragraphs. The imposed serial order of recall also was varied. Results indicate that low recall of irrelevant paragraphs cannot be due to output interference or limitation of the capacity to store information. Generation of retrieval cues during learning appears to stimulate the formation of a retrieval plan involving the estimation of the number of relevant and irrelevant paragraphs to be recalled
