The influence of the extension of the size of a text on free recall was studied with 52 college students as Ss. When the time available for studying the text was fixed, increasing the number of constituent scenes or increasing the size of the constituent scenes appeared not to influence the total amount of reproduced information. However, these two methods of extension of the learning material had a different effect on the composition of the resulting reproductions. The results of a subsequent experiment, in which the study times were adjusted to the length of the learning material, suggested that Ss tend to process information from texts up to some individual standard amount. When this standard amount is reached, further extension of the text seems to result in a mere redistribution of the recalled information over the learning material. The results are related to the question of whether the chances for recall of individual scenes from a text are independent
