Two experiments investigated the influence on free recall of the addition of embellishing details to half of the constituent scenes of a text. In experiment 1 (N = 52) Ss studied a narrative text for future free recall. The length of half or all 20 scenes was doubled by addition of embellishing details. Extension of the length of relatively frequently reproduced scenes increased their frequency of recall, while extension of relatively less frequently reproduced scenes tended to decrease their frequency of reproduction. In experiment 2 (N = 56) Ss studied an enumerative expository text. Doubling the size of half of the constituent clusters of information did not influence their frequency of reproduction, while the nonextended clusters appeared to be depressed in their frequency of recall. The effect of extension of the size of the constituent scenes of a text on free recall appears to be a function of their saliency within the context of its overall structure
