A model of immediate recall providing operational definitions of input and output processing times and rates was presented. The model defines output rate as the average interresponse interval with input time being the latency to the first response minus output time per response. Four experiments were conducted (Ns = 6, 6, 6, 10, respectively) to evaluate the independence of the responsiveness of the input and output measures to variables found to affect total processing time. In each experiment, male and female undergraduates were presented with multiple-stimulus, multiple-response short-term memory tasks having a limited stimulus duration. The experiments systematically examined the effecès of stimulus density, stimulus duration, stimulus location, and response panel labeling. It was concluded that the measures of input and output were differentially affected by the independent variables and provided information which was not available when using the overall measure of total time. An extension of the basic model which assumes some serial processing in the input was also explored
