Samples of children and adults in Texas, Taipei, and Kyoto were administered the same free word association list, in English, Mandarin Chinese, and Japanese, respectively. Most of the children, but almost none of the adults, evidenced a primary response mode involving actions (rip-shirt, chair-sit). These results were interpreted as evidence for the probable endogenous construction of a universal child's cognitive dictionary, with a structure derived from sensorimotor action schemes as proposed by Piaget
