This paper reports findings from a midwestern survey concerning perceptions of the fit between one's education and occupation among the general population. The distribution of these perceptions is presented according to gender, age, and level of education. We analyze educational-occupational fit, job satisfaction, and leisure orientation as related to life satisfaction. The data do not support popular conceptions concerning negative repercussions of "overeducation." The findings show that leisure involvement can serve as a partial compensation for deficits in the job satisfaction.KEYWORDS: Telephone surveyJob satisfactionLeisure orientationLife satisfaction
