and environment in the development of musicality is difficult to obtain. Evidence from experimental studies requires cautious evaluation because one cannot entirely ignore the partisan spirit in which many investigations have been conducted. In a short article such as this, it is impracticable to do more than refer the reader to standard texts such as Kwalwasser,, Farnsworth, or Lundin, for summaries and discussion of early research findings.1 The extreme llereditarian standpoint is presented in Shuter's detailed account of research, The Psychology of Musical Ability.2 Earlier, in her doctoral dissertation, Shuter reported the findings of an investigation into hereditary and environmental factors in musical ability.3 An unsatisfactory aspect of this study was the investigator's inability to draw any conclusions from her own experimental results with respect to the influence of environmental factors. She stated that tllis was due to the small size of her samples. In her l)ooks Shuter interprets research data to support the view that musical aptitude is largely innate because it tends to run in families and to appear early in one's life.4
