13 patients being studied for primary infertility had postcoital tests done between 3 and 5 minutes after ejaculation. Husbands had ejaculates of excellent characteristics. Thorough examination of the women showed no defects; all were ovulatory and each had 3-5 previous excellent postcoital tests. In all 13 instances the mucus from the cervical canal was found to be teemimg with active spermatozoa. Bloody material obtained from the endometrium showed spermatozoa in 5 but none in 8 cases. None of the 5 with positive findings conceived within the next 2 years but 4 of the 8 with negative findings eventually conceived and carried a normal pregnancy to term. No movement of cervical mucus was observed when patients carried out deep inhalation and exhalation or by an organsm produced by masturbation. Radiopaque material was not found beyond a cervical cap and exocervix after similar tests although sperm placed in the radiopaque material was found in the cervical canal. The significance of these observations is not yet apparent
