The title of this essay suggests two classic articles: Albert Hourani's Th changing face of the Fertile Crescent in the XVIIIth century, and Norman Itzkowitz's Eighteenth century Ottoman realities.1 The passing of more than 40 and 35 years respectively may appear to be an eternity in the flow of publication, particularly in contemporary scholar ship, which is organised now along Stakhanovite lines.
