VINCENT P., CHELL E. and HAWORTH J. (1987) Regional distribution of consultancy firms servicing the MAPCON scheme: a preliminary analysis, Reg. Studies 21, 505–518. This paper examines published data pertaining to the MAPCON scheme which is one of a number of government schemes aimed at the revival of British industry. The paper outlines the argument regarding the role of information in enabling technological change. This raises two general research questions: the availability and sources of information; and the awareness of firms of this information. The related research question is: what role does the technical consultant play as a source of information to enable technological change? Other research evidence is provided to demonstrate the regional disparity in the awareness and utilization of such information. MAPCON, launched in 1978, is a government scheme to encourage firms to consider the feasibility of introducing microelectronics into manufacturing processes and products. The scheme contributes to the costs of employing a consultancy firm. Published lists of authorized MAPCON consultancy firms gives information on the skills offered, size and location of the consultancy firm. The location of 434 firms in the 1985 list were mapped using computerized cartography. The regional distribution of these firms on a number of dimensions is shown. The data tend to support the view that there are regional disparities in the availability of technical consultancy firms. Finally, the implications of these preliminary findings for regional policy are discussed.
