SCHOOL AND REVOLUTION, by MARC RIGLET With respect to education and school, the worker and socialist movement has two traditions. The first, which is republican and socialist and is inherited from the Enlightenment, is that of the school as liberator. The second, which was defined with greater clarity by anarcho-syndicalism, sees education as one of the expressions of class domination, and school as one of the instruments of this domination. How did the nascent French Communist Party assimilate or criticize these two traditions? Between 1920 and 1931, it took them over one after the other without making any specific contribution of its own with the result that, ten years after coming into existence, the Communist Party was employing anarcho-syndicalist language and arguments with regard to school. Nothing more should be seen in this adoption than a materialist preliminary to the assimilation of Leninism, and nothing in this ten-year development other than the short history of exorcised reformist origins.
