The aim of the founders of MLN is defined by the first editorial board at the beginning of Volume I, No. 1 in January 18861 as that of providing much-needed special organ of communication in which scholars and teachers working in the fields of English, German, and Romance Languages, might express their opinions and have the benefit of frank and unbiased criticism of their personal views on literary or scientific and also find critical assessments of the scholarly works and text-books that were then continually appearing in their various fields. In order be able treat a variety of subjects in little space, the editors thought it expedient at the outset to throw the bulk of the matter into the form of 'Notes'; however, even early issues carry longer studies such as now predominate in the journal. Over the years many Goethe-studies have appeared in MLN, and since these are part of the und aber Hunderte Goethe-studies in American and foreign journals which Heinz Kindermann did not include in Das Goethebild des 20. Jahrhunderts,2 we thought that the 150th anniversary of Goethe's death might be fitting occasion bring them the attention of scholars.
