Despite its high price, Virtues and Their Vices is a bargain because it is (figuratively) two books in one. The two volumes differ in content, tone, and degree of coherence. Along with a common binding, the two volumes share a clearly written, helpful introduction, and a thorough index. Each essay has its own bibliography. Volume I consists of essays on the four cardinal virtues (prudence, justice, fortitude, temperance), the three theological virtues (faith, hope, charity), and the seven capital vices plus their corresponding corrective virtues (lust/chastity, gluttony/abstinence, avarice/liberality, sloth/love, vicious/virtuous anger, envy/love and humility, pride/humility). Pope's essay on virtue and theology which discusses all three theological virtues arguably belongs with these fourteen essays, for it shares their tone and content. Most of these essays present Aquinas’ view of a virtue and/or vice, phrased in modern terms, and explicated not only via Aquinas, but also via other thinker(s) within the Catholic tradition.
