In November 1971 a questionnaire study was done on the first 236 men vasectomized at the Margaret Sanger Research Bureau in New New City. The group which did not respond to the questionnaire was less educated and more Catholic than the group that did respond. The findings indicate that the most important reasons for getting a vasectomy for these men were 1) desire to avoid a large family; 2) concern about the side effects of the pill; and 3) a general aversion to other methods of contraception. Very few mentioned their own health or genetic or psychological problems as motivating factors. Wives agreed with the motivating factors for their husbands. 70% of the respondents had some type of postoperative complication rarely enough to lose days of work. Plain swelling and skin discoloration were the main complications reported and at a rate much higher than in other postoperative studies. Resumption of sexual activity occurred on the average after 13 days
