This paper focuses on Eileen Chang's self-translation The Rouge of the North basing on her own Chinese novel Jinsuo Ji in American context. The comparative study of the original work and its translation betrays the inner struggles in the heart of the novelist and translator in an alien soil, which are reflected in the adaptation of the plot, the choices of words, reshaping the characters, etc. By detailed analysis of the changes in her translation, we conclude that Chang's translation is trans-writing in nature, and her translation performance was in fact an effort to mediate between Chinese and American cultures
