In January 1961, when l'Institute de Sociologie de l'Université Libre de Bruxelles proposed that we direct a sociology of literature research group and devote our first efforts to a study of Andre Malraux' novels, we accepted quite apprehensively. Our work on the sociology of seventeenth century philosophy and tragic literature did not allow us to prejudge the possibility of a study bearing on novels written almost in a contemporary period. The first year our undertaking was chiefly devoted to a preliminary study bearing on the problems of the novel as a literary genre
