paper came about as a result of being asked to teach a large section of introductory sociology after a five-year break. In the past, I had enjoyed teaching the introductory course. Nonetheless, I found myself wondering if I could summon the vitality needed to get and keep the students' attention. As I had had success in the past using various aspects of popular culture as illustrations to which students could relate, I began to research a number of media-related exercises
