The sociology capstone course should be the crowning achievement in constructing the student's intellectual home, built of theory, methods, substantive areas, and application. It should be reinforced by a sense of ethics and sociological imagination. To begin the construction process, I list for students the following goals at the first meeting of my capstone seminar at Colorado State University as follows: To relate sociological knowledge to historical, social, and ethical concerns confronting society; To integrate theoretical, methodological, and substantive issues in class discussions; To develop, implement, and report a research project that incorporates appropriate theory and method in the study of a substantive issue; To demonstrate sociological knowledge achieved over the four-year program through an outcomes assessment test; and To understand the expectations of the professional sociologist. These goals are consistent with goals for sociology departments, as set forth in capstone literature
