A new course in qualitative research methods was introduced recently at North Central College. Given the students' lack of familiarity with the basic concepts and techniques of qualitative methodology, we chose to begin the course with an exercise based on the experience of everyday social life. Using the social construction of reality as a theoretical framework, we wanted to exemplify the meaning of in a way that would engender students' interest in and grasp of this material (see Berger and Luckmann 1966; Schutz 1962). In brainstorming for appropriate examples, we determined that the contrast between students' and faculty members' interpretations on some issue might be particularly well suited to this purpose. Discussion could focus on the different lived worlds and thus on the different beliefs, values, and practices, of college students and faculty members. The issue we chose was classroom teaching, through the meanings attached to phrases on the college's Student Evaluation of Teaching form. Early in Qualitative Research Methods, students were given the following assignment
Higher education · Mathematics education · Pedagogy · Political science · Qualitative research · Social science · Sociology · Teaching method · Cognitive Science and Education Research · Educational Research and Analysis · Psychology · Sociology and Cultural Identity Studies
