The general purpose of the ASA Teaching Services Program (TSP) is to improve and support effective teaching within the discipline of sociology. Operating since 1970, current major projects of the TSP include the Teaching Resources Center, which offers more than 60 publications on teaching sociology, and the Teaching Resources Group, which is a network of over 50 trained consultants who are available for departmental visits or teaching workshops. An information questionnaire, consisting of about 80 questions, was voluntarily taken by a self-selected sample of participants at the 1985 and 1986 American Sociological Association annual meetings in Washington, D.C. and New York City. The questionnaires, developed by TSP, were completed by a total of 246 persons during the two conventions (132 in 1985 and 114 in 1986). These surveys asked about prior experience with ASA workshops and publications, and they presented a list of over 30 possible workshop topics asking respondents to indicate which of these were most interesting for future workshops. The respondents were also solicited for new ideas for workshops and publications, and asked about their notions of the ideal format for workshops in terms of cost and duration
