This study investigated the differential effects of behavioral objectives on the achievement and retention of high, medium, and low GPA students on knowledge, comprehension, and application, when behavioral objectives were given and their relation to test items was explained to students in the beginning of each lesson. The experiment was conducted in natural classroom environments using 472 10th grade students in 14 intact classes from 14 randomly selected high schools; it lasted for 11 weeks. The design was pretest-posttest treatment-control and data were analyzed by MANCOVA. The results indicated positive but different effects of behavioral objectives among groups of students with different levels of previous achievement. The results also indicated that when adjustment was made for knowledge-level performance, differences between treatment and control groups vanished for comprehension and application. It was concluded that behavioral objectives may prove more effective if used in a manner appropriate to the specific ability levels of students
