This article will discuss the impact of demographic trends in the United States and state‐mandated teacher certification practices on the minority teacher population in elementary and secondary schools. The potential for teacher certification procedures which rely on standardized tests to drastically reduce the future minority teacher pool will be described. Collaborative educational programs between testing companies, state education agencies, and educational institutions will be proposed as a way to increase the representation of minorities in the teaching profession
