The subject of the study of which this article is an abstract is instruction in the use of books and libraries in teachers colleges, or, in other words, instruction for the patron of the library rather than for one who is to become a librarian. In using the term non-professional in the title of the study, the following definitions have been kept in mind: Professional library instruction trains for librarianship. Semi-professional library instruction is the term applied to instruction intended to give training in the care of small school libraries, and often called teacher-librarian courses
