Strategies that can be used to improve the representation and participation of minority faculty in research universities are based on several assumptions. Increasing the pipeline begins in the elementary schools and not at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Programs at The University of Michigan categorized as pre‐collegiate, collegiate, graduate, professional, faculty, and staff are working toward increasing the numbers in the pipeline. Institutions of higher education have an obligation and responsibility to increase the quality and quantity of the education of minority students receive in K‐12 school systems; the Ph.D granting institutions have an obligation to produce more minority Ph.D.s from which faculty are drawn. A change in the corporate culture is a necessary step to increase minority faculty representation and participation in research universities and must be accompanied by an increase in the quality and quantity of participation of minority faculty in the governance, allocation of resources, and control of these institutions. An equity‐based education is four‐dimensional and each dimension must be addressed in order to increase minority faculty representation. The four dimensions are: Access, Process, Achievement, and Transfer. The changing demographics, the internationalization of America, and the move to an information‐ and knowledge‐intensive 21st century dictate the need for increased minority representation at the student, faculty, staff, and administrative levels
