Librarianship is one of emerging professions. As such, it represents one of oldest as well as one of youngest callings. The ruins of ancient world furnish evidence that older civilizations had their library systems, i. e., they had a place for collection and preservation of literary materials for and for reference. As long as production of such records depended upon art of writing with crude tools on cumbersome and difficult media, and often only a single copy was made, it was inevitable that great emphasis should have been placed upon the safekeeping or custodial care of record, once it had been produced. This ancient conception of librarianship as consisting of of literary materials, written or printed, has survived even in modern times
