Background Adults are entering or returning to colleges and universities in record numbers. Adult learners are not only older than traditional students, but also they bring to the college setting different educational interests, work experiences, lifestyles, personal and academic needs, and motivational levels. Higher education has responded to this student population by setting up innovative programs: independent study, alternative colleges, external degree programs, revitalized adult education programs, nontraditional study, and individualized degree programs.' Evaluating the educational impact of new programs for adult learners is a major task for educational research
