Aline Rousselle, Aspects sociaux du recrutement ecclésiastique au IVe siècle, p. 333-370. Le christianisme institutionnel a progressé très lentement en Gaule. Les documents font apparaître de nombreux obstacles au recrutement des cadres des communautés. Les textes ecclésiastiques montrent que les restrictions se multiplient, et en particulier les interdits sexuels. Les documents ecclésiastiques et impériaux font état de la contradiction entre les nécessités de ce recrutement et la progressive fixation héréditaire à la profession et aux charges curiales des propriétaires fonciers. Les clercs inférieurs peuvent être recrutés parmi les affranchis, les anciens soldats, les fonctionnaires à la retraite; les clercs supérieurs chastes, parmi les clarissimes libres d'obligations professionnelles
