Carminé Ampolo, Le origini di Roma e la «Cité antique», p. 567-575. Si cerca di stabilire quando si può parlare realmente di Città nel processo di sviluppo che diede origine a Roma. Si parte dalla concezione antica della Città (nel senso di polis, civitas) e dalle analisi del tipo ideale della Città antica, quale è stato analizzato dai moderni a partire da Fustel de Coulanges. I dati archeologici vengono riesaminati in questa prospettiva. La documentazione archeologica consente di individuare i «segni» della Città di Roma nel centro civico, nei suoi aspetti politici e religiosi (culto di Vesta, divinità poliadiche, Comizio) e di porre la formazione di Roma corne Città nella 2a metà del VII secolo
