The role of the NCVQ in the recognition and assessment of skilled performance is considered. This is contrasted with the more ad hoc approach traditionally adopted in Britain. The NCVQ model is then critically analysed. Problems associated with assessment and with the substance of NVQs are indentified. The paper concludes that the current model is both inflexible and rigid. When compared with the more traditional approaches, this leads to a process of deskilling.
