L'objet de cet article est de clarifier ce que l'on designe sous le terme de « societe civile » en examinant plusieurs definitions de cette notion. A mi-chemin entre la reification de la nature et celle de l'Etat, la « societe civile » incarne l'humanite libre et rappelle que la liberte sociale n'est jamais garantie. Selon l'A., la societe civile ne se pose pas contre l'Etat mais au contraire leurs interactions invitent a se tourner vers la tradition democratique
