The fi rst seven chapters present an engaging ethnographic narrative of an eschatological movement that took place among mem- bers of a religious community in Papua New Guinea known as the Pomio Kivung. The eighth chapter then seeks to explain signi fi cant features of that movement by formulating a vigorous and ambitious theory of two modes of religiosity, which Whitehouse calls
