The period under study can be subdivided by the first appearance of Bellin's maps in 1743. Prior to that date, most printed maps were based on the cartography of De l'Isle and Lahontan whose sources of information were derived from material drafted late in the seventeenth century. The manuscript mapping of the first forty years of the eighteenth century treated the peripheral and older settled areas in greater detail than in the previous century. Bellin and D'Anville were the first cartographers to make use of this new material. After the 1740s the original mapping became increasingly focussed on the strategic lower Great Lakes — St. Lawrence — Ohio area. Little of this material was transmitted to European mapmakers. Most of the printed maps after the early 1740s were based on the maps published by Bellin and D'Anville
