His asking price for a shave was a cent, but . . . he made a reduction for his regular clients. . . . He would arrange [them] so that every man had a step to himself in the stone stairway leading up to the quay. When each of them was in his place, Jules would go over to the river edge, fill a little tin soap-cup with water, and then start up the stairs. The man on the lowest step would be lathered first, then the man on the second, and so on all the way to the top. As he left each man, Jules would say, 'Keep rubbing it.' They all did. When he had lathered the man on the top step, the old barber would throw the tin soap-cup down the steps, shaving each man as he passed and rubbing his razor on a big apron he wore. It took him usually 40 minutes to get down the 22 steps, less than 2 minutes to a step
