Archaeological excavations in 1997 led to the discovery of a fresco in a buried gallery under Trajan's Baths in Rome. The painting is a remarkable bird's‐eye view ofa city. Whether or not it represents any real city, the composition is of considerable interest to historians of cartography as a spectacular example of early urban representation. As Sovraintendente ai Beni Culturali of the Municipality of Rome, Eugenio La Rocca is responsible for conducting excavations and restoration in the urban area. The Editor asked Mm to contribute a brief description of the fresco and its architedural context
