As part of the Psychology of Women Quarterly’s (PWQ) retrospective on some of its most cited publications, I was invited to reflect on what had led me to write the paper, “Considerations for Prevention of HIV Infection Among Hispanic Women,” published in 1988 (Amaro, 1988), along with my thoughts on what has since changed in HIV prevention with Latinas and on the direction of my work since that publication. The purpose of this paper is not to present a comprehensive review of the literature on Latina women and HIV, rather it is to provide a personal and contextual picture of the factors that shaped my work at the writing of that paper, how my program of research has evolved, and the changes that have taken place in HIV prevention research with Latinas. Due to the collaborative nature of my research and the importance that mentoring junior scientists has had in my professional career, I have invited three researchers whom I mentored and who are now at various stages in their careers to share how their research was informed in part by my work on HIV prevention with Latinas. These collaborations have been personally energizing, have expanded my own original vision, and have led to trajectories that include structural interventions and international work. Our paper first presents the political, personal, and epidemiological context of my 1988 publication in PWQ (Amaro, 1988). Second, it provides a brief summary of progress in HIV prevention with Latinas. The third section comprises reflections from three feminist researchers whose work was informed by the 1988 article and by subsequent work I conducted and published, often in collaboration with them, on the role of gender in HIV and related public health issues. Their reflections are offered as examples of the key role of mentoring and training opportunities for junior researchers, one of the recommendations in the 1988 publication. Finally, our paper offers conclusions about progress to date and recommendations regarding future research and public health programs
