ABSTRACT The author first makes the distinction between the three major stages which the socialist-type societies go or are to go through: a) an initial period of transition; b) one of creation of the socialist-type society, and c) the period of (transition to) true communism. Then she describes the transformations undergone by leisure during the first two periods. During the first phase, the role assigned to leisure is strongly conditioned by the goals sought within the country's economic development (planning). During the second phase, leisure is to be defined in connection with cultural involvement, with the mass media, with popular culture; with respect to work and the time it consumes, leisure is also an important facet of the so-called non instrumental culture, and in particular with certain hedonistic and esthetic features. The principles of the cultural development of leisure in socialist-type societies, are equality, anti-consumerism, and secularisation.
