Multiple overlapping crises, such as the Global Financial Crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and climate change, have exposed the deficiencies of a market-led political economy. Financialization and the dominance of a private financial system are deeply implicated as causes and therefore cannot realistically be part of the solution. A rejuvenated public sector is needed to institute massive and targetted funding, and the role of public banks should be a central component as alternatives to neoliberal financial capitalism are devised
