As for many other languages and as a result of evolution and also of the fact that the Cyrillic alphabet was originally conceived to note Old Church Slavonic, Russian inherited, at the end of 17th century, an alphabet and an orthography which did not agree with its phonic substance ; the Slavonic-Russian colingualism which was then prevailing made the situation even more intricate. Such an inadequacy, led in 18th century Russia, to a large discussion about spelling, around Trediakovskij' s phonetic spelling and Lomonosov' s traditional etymological spelling (morphological in fact). These re- currrent and gradual approaches to the problem introduced the treatment of language as a system, the elaboration of a heuristic method to conceptualize the phonem and an ontological interrogation : which is the basic linguistic unit in Russian, the phoneme, the morpheme or the word
