The paper focuses on the similarities and differences between the rhetorical structure of some Slavonic (Russian and Bulgarian) and English scientific texts. The aim of the study is to test the widely accepted assumption that scientific discourse has universal features which are language‐independent. The analysis is based on speech act theory and takes into account both the macro‐ and micro‐functions of the various rhetorical units. The results of the investigation do not support the hypothesis completely, but rather point to a number of differences between the two types of rhetorical patterns due to variations in cultural background, academic writing traditions and different thought patterns
