The evolution of Māori-medium mathematics education has been instrumental in supporting the revitalisation of the Māori language, but less so for Māori cultural knowledge. This paper examines the enduring legacy of colonialism in repressing the illumination and honouring of Māori knowledge, one of the key goals of Māori-medium schooling. Colonialism and intersectional forms of power and oppression are deeply rooted in education systems and are difficult to change, as this power is manifested and maintained in State-mandated curriculum and policy. This paper draws on the cultural symmetry framework to examine the opportunities that Māori-medium mathematics educators have taken to create space to illuminate Māori knowledge in the teaching and learning of mathematics
