This article looks at new types of social movement in France. Over the past decade, France has witnessed a spectacular rise of new forms of mobilisation, ranging from anti‐racism and the 'solidarity' movement to the movement of the unemployed or the homeless. The rise of such movements goes against the idea that France has become increasingly indifferent to politics. Far from signalling political indifference, these movements demonstrate a new commitment to politics as a means of securing social change. They reflect a desire to achieve certain goals, not by relying on the existing structures of the political system, by engaging in direct forms of collective action. This article argues that the rise of such movements is evidence of a new and more dynamic form of citizenship within French society
