Collective actions against élites and/ or authorities are common ways by which people with grievances express their discontent. In recent years organisations of the unemployed in Ireland and France have been at the forefront of many types of protest activities of disadvantaged groups, although the grievances and the types of protest activities of such groups have differed somewhat in the two countries. This article considers contemporary forms of collective actions as they refer to organisations of the unemployed in Ireland and France. It discusses the collective actions which these groups have initiated and explores the significance of the actions
