Artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots are increasingly used as a community engagement tool, yet their contribution to participatory disaster risk reduction (DRR) and sustainable development remains unclear. This study synthesises the state of knowledge on chatbots for participatory DRR and assesses how the evidence aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11 (sustainable cities and communities), SDG 13 (climate action) and SDG 16 (inclusive institutions). Following PRISMA guidelines, 57 peer‐reviewed studies were selected from major academic databases. The synthesis reveals rapid growth of interest but limited rigorous evaluation of outcomes that matter for risk reduction and sustainable development, such as protective actions taken, long‐term mitigation, inclusion of marginalised groups, hybrid architecture integration and governance, including data stewardship and integration with local institutions. Findings reveal that chatbots are methodologically fragmented, reflecting limited integration between technology and disaster domains and minimal engagement with end users. By consolidating fragmented evidence and highlighting gaps, the review clarifies where chatbots can add value to people‐centred, participatory DRR
