We examine the spatial distribution of population and employment in Hong Kong by specifying and estimating monocentric and polycentric population and employment density functions. Our empirical results indicate that population concentrations in Hong Kong are best characterized as monocentric, with the single center located in West Kowloon. We also find that employment concentrations are consistent with the polycentric model with four centers located in West Kowloon, Central, Causeway Bay and Tsuen Wan. We discuss the urban structure of Hong Kong in relation to the government's urban planning policies
