William C. Clarke weaves together the layers of experience that confronted him 30 years earlier as he looked back at the slides he had taken in 1964 during his fieldwork as a geographer among the Maring people of Papua New Guinea. Moving between his personal memories and his current disciplinary assessment of Maring horticulture, he creates a work which he calls An Eccentric Ethnography [italics]. Responding to Clarke's juxtaposition of text and images, Allison Jablonko, who herself did anthropological fieldwork among a neighboring group of Maring in 1963, draws on concepts which have developed in visual anthropology over the same 30 year period to analyze specific photographs in depth, as well as to raise more general questions concerning photographic representation and poetry. She explores such issues as personal interest, the danger of exoticism, and the place of photo‐ellicita‐tion, concluding that an understanding of visual anthropological principles can enhance readers'/viewers' ability to grasp, through Clarke's words/pictures, his profound sense of Maring horticultural life as it was in the 1960s
