In this article, the origins of the conflict in the former Yugoslavia are reanalyzed using insights from Hofstede's (1980, 1991, 1994) theory on differences between national cultures. This material is intended to provide information to put the role of political elites in culture-related conflicts in a somewhat broader, embedded perspective. I argue that some societies are more susceptible to political manipulation than others. A comparative perspective, focusing on differences between Belgium and the former Yugoslavia, illustrates the argument. Last, I give some implications for both theory and practice
